Standpipe/Hydrant

Fire protection standpipe and hose equipment provides firefighters and trained personnel with immediate access to water for fire suppression within buildings. Standpipe systems consist of vertical or horizontal piping installed to deliver water to strategically located hose outlets. Hose valves, also referred to as landing valves, are installed on each outlet and allow controlled discharge of water; they may be angle, globe, or pressure-reducing types depending on system design and pressure conditions. Fire department connections (FDCs) permit firefighters to supplement the standpipe system by pumping water from fire apparatus into the system. Hose cabinets enclose and protect hoses, nozzles, and valves, maintaining readiness and preventing damage. Hoses—typically linen or synthetic jacketed—convey water from the valve to the fire area, while nozzles control the flow pattern and rate for effective application. Additional equipment includes caps, reducers, adapters, and test headers used for connecting, draining, or testing standpipes in accordance with NFPA 14 or equivalent standards. Together, these components ensure rapid, reliable water delivery and operational versatility for both manual and fire department firefighting operations within multi-story and large-area structures.
