Water Supply
Water supplies for fire protection systems are designed to provide a reliable and sufficient source of water to operate sprinklers, standpipes, and other fire suppression equipment. The most common source is a municipal water supply, which delivers pressurized water through a public distribution network. Municipal systems are convenient and often dependable but may not always provide the pressure or flow required for specific building needs, especially in high-rise structures or large industrial facilities. In such cases, fire protection storage tanks are used to provide a dedicated on-site water supply. These tanks can be aboveground, underground, or elevated and are sized to meet the required system demand for a specified duration. When either a municipal system or storage tank cannot supply sufficient pressure, fire pumps are installed to boost the water to the necessary operating levels. Pumps ensure that adequate flow and pressure reach all parts of the system, even under peak demand. Together, the municipal supply, storage tanks, and fire pumps form a reliable, redundant water supply arrangement that ensures continuous operation of fire protection systems under all conditions.
