Fire Pumps
Fire pumps are critical components of automatic sprinkler systems, designed to provide adequate water flow and pressure when the available supply is insufficient to meet system demand. Their primary function is to ensure that sprinklers and standpipes operate effectively during a fire emergency by boosting water pressure from a municipal source, storage tank, or reservoir. Electric motor–driven pumps are common where reliable electrical service exists, offering quick start-up and low maintenance. Diesel engine–driven pumps are used where electrical reliability is uncertain or backup power is required, such as in high-risk or mission-critical facilities. Fire pumps are also classified by configuration: horizontal split-case pumps are the most common for large systems, known for their durability and ease of maintenance, while vertical turbine pumps are used when the water source is below grade, such as in wells or tanks. Fire pumps are often necessary in high-rise buildings, where water pressure must overcome elevation losses, and in industrial or storage facilities with high flow or density requirements. These pumps ensure consistent performance and reliability, forming a vital link between the water supply and the fire protection system.
