Legislation, Codes & Standards Development
Fire protection industry organizations play a vital role in shaping legislation, developing codes and standards, and promoting consistent levels of fire and life safety protection worldwide. These organizations conduct research, analyze fire incident data, and collaborate with governments, insurers, and industry experts to create evidence-based requirements for building design, fire suppression, detection, and emergency response. Their work ensures that regulations remain current with evolving technology, materials, and fire risks.
In the United States, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and International Code Council (ICC) develop model codes and standards adopted into law by jurisdictions. Globally, similar roles are fulfilled by the British Standards Institution (BSI) and Fire Protection Association (FPA) in the UK, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) in Europe, Underwriters Laboratories (UL Solutions), FM Global, Standards Council of Canada (SCC), and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden to name a few. These organizations’ collaboration ensures harmonization of global safety standards, continuous improvement of fire protection practices, and enhanced public safety through strong, science-based regulatory frameworks.
