PRODUCT AUDITING
Continued product auditing of certified and listed fire protection products by nationally recognized testing and certifying laboratories such as UL, FM, VdS, and BRE is essential to ensuring long-term reliability and safety. Certification does not end with initial approval; instead, laboratories require ongoing re-examination to confirm that products continue to meet the same performance criteria under which they were originally tested.
This process involves periodic sampling and retesting of products to verify that materials, design, and performance remain consistent with the approved specifications and drawings. Equally important is the auditing of the manufacturing facility itself. Laboratories conduct scheduled and unannounced inspections to review quality control procedures, material sourcing, production processes, and recordkeeping. Any changes in design, materials, or processes must be re-evaluated and approved before the product may continue to bear the certification mark.
These audits safeguard against manufacturing drift, cost-cutting measures, or inadvertent changes that could compromise performance. For fire protection systems—where reliability directly impacts life safety—the continued auditing process provides assurance to engineers, contractors, insurers, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) that certified products remain trustworthy and effective throughout their production lifecycle
