Sprinklers Mandated for Certain Occupancies in Mexico City

In a big win for fire safety, automatic sprinklers are now mandatory in Mexico City based on the occupancy and risk of the buildings. The city officially published its Complementary Technical Standard (NTC) in December, marking a breakthrough update to its construction regulations:

– Sprinklers are now mandatory in all new construction, and in remodels or occupancy changes
– Fire protection systems must use appropriate, certified equipment

In this standard, the classification of occupations was developed in a table that indicates the level of the protection system required based on its risk, number of square meters of construction, storage and number of people.

This achievement was thanks to the support of AMRACI members and a multidisciplinary group.

This regulation also referenced the Mexican standard NMX-066 for sprinkler systems, making it mandatory.
