Conventional Sprinklers
A conventional fire sprinkler is designed to discharge water in both upward and downward directions, producing a spherical spray pattern. This type of sprinkler is typically installed in the upright or pendent position. Unlike modern spray sprinklers that direct most water downward for ceiling-level fires, conventional sprinklers deliver part of the discharge upward to cool structural elements. These sprinklers were widely used in older systems before the introduction of standard “spray” sprinklers and are still permitted where specifically allowed. They are generally not suitable for use under obstructions or irregular ceiling configurations without special consideration.
