Dry Type Sprinklers
A dry-type fire sprinkler is designed for use in areas subject to freezing temperatures where wet pipe systems are not suitable. Unlike standard sprinklers, it contains an internal extension tube that keeps water sealed back within a heated portion of the system. When the sprinkler activates due to heat, the thermal element releases, allowing water to travel down the dry barrel and discharge through the sprinkler. Dry-type sprinklers are commonly installed in unheated areas such as loading docks, walk-in freezers, or parking garages. They can be used with dry pipe, preaction, or even wet systems where piping penetrates into cold zones. Dry-type sprinklers are Listed and Approved for specific orientations (upright, pendent, or sidewall) and must be installed in accordance with their listing and the applicable local Codes and Standards.
